Intravides is not a typical university spinoff.
Aside the two academic partners, who take the technical and scientifical expertise in house, two other business partners are entrepreneurs with experience in industrial and health field. They have a clear vision of the market strategy and the product growth. Our project is aimed to create an AR application for the OR.
Holosurgery leverages augmented reality goggles to allow surgeons to strategically access medical information and 3D surgical planning during operations.

Augmented Reality is a technology allowing the superimposition of digital contents on the field of view of a user, who can eventually interact with those.
Anything with a digital camera allowing the generation of digital content and their superimposition to the real world view. For instance, smartphones allow AR. In our case we use a commercial hardware, the Microsoft Hololens 2, with this embedded functionality.
It is a simulation that surgeons do, in order to plan surgeries ahead. This is usually done from 2D medical imaging of the patient. We can perform the surgical planning on the 3D models reconstructed from the same medical images of the patient.

Our goggles with the integrate software are very easy to use. Our “1 minute training” allows to be operational in the OR with Microsoft Hololens 2 even for a surgeon who is wearing those for the very first time without previous knowledge. We don’t need complex and tedious environmental setup, just wear it and work!

Patient specific 3D Reconstruction

Starting from medical images, we reconstruct the patient anatomy in 3D, using our patent-pending pipeline.

Surgical Planning

Together with the surgeon, we design a surgical planning and place onto the 3D model of the patient anatomy, reference points or implantable devices to be placed during surgery.

Support in the OR

We set up Microsoft Hololens 2, equipped with our customized software, to visualize the 3D model, together with all relevant contents surgeon needs during surgical procedure, as interactive holograms. Our software also allows videconference, hence livestream of the goggles camera.

Solution

We are witnessing an age where technology is such an integral part of the medical practice, and medical images can take advantage of multiple visualization techniques through diverse display systems. Which pushes the limits of innovation in utilizing the field of visual computing and immersive analytics to best serve the medical domain.

Our project is aimed to create an AR application for the OR.

Holosurgery leverages augmented reality goggles to allow surgeons to access medical information during the operations. This application is an alternative to navigation software currently in use in the OR.

Remote assistance is our newer application allowing technicians or specialized medical doctors to enter the OR through the eyes of surgeons or OR support team to provide remote guidance, allowing the operator to ear and visualize live instructions provided by a remote expert.
